The Criminal Code Review Board (CCRB) holds hearings to review cases where a person has been found not criminally responsible or unfit to stand trial.  

HUMAN RIGHTS

Where a person experiences discrimination due to their race, gender, ability, or other reasons, they are entitled to make a complaint to the provincial or federal Human Rights Commission.  

INTERVENOR

A class action is a type of civil lawsuit where the party that is suing encompasses a larger group of people, “the class”, who have all suffered similar harms.

Habeas Corpus is the legal mechanism for telling the court that, while incarcerated, one’s liberty rights are being unfairly and/or unreasonably restricted.  

INSTITUTIONAL DISCIPLINARY HEARINGS

Institutional disciplinary hearings occur when a person who is incarcerated has been charged with violating the prison’s internal rules or regulations. 

JUDICIAL REVIEW

If all possible options to resolve a concern with a government decision or action have been tried without a satisfactory result, a person may take their case to court to have a judge review the decision. 

PAROLE ASSISTANCE

Parole allows people in prison to serve a portion of their sentence in the community under specific conditions, rather than staying in prison for their entire sentence.

POLICE COMPLAINTS

Anyone may make a complaint about police misconduct to the responsible police department. Some examples of misconduct include arrest without cause, use of unnecessary force, and racist or otherwise oppressive conduct.  

SECTION 161 VARIATIONS
