HUMAN RIGHTS COMPLAINTS

Naming discrimination. Protecting dignity.

Human rights complaints are legal complaints about discrimination, harassment, or unequal treatment based on protected personal characteristics, such as race, disability, sex, gender identity, Indigenous identity, family status, religion, or other grounds protected by human rights law.

PATH assists with human rights matters that fall within our mandate, particularly where discrimination intersects with incarceration, policing, gender-based violence, poverty, disability, or systemic barriers to justice. Our approach is trauma-informed, practical, and focused on helping clients identify the harm, understand their options, and seek accountability.

How We Can Help

PATH may be able to assist with:

  • Reviewing whether a situation may involve discrimination under human rights legislation

  • Helping clients identify the protected grounds and harms involved

  • Drafting or supporting human rights complaints

  • Gathering documents, records, and witness information

  • Supporting clients through mediation, investigation, or settlement discussions

  • Advising on related legal options where appropriate

What to Expect

If your matter appears to fall within PATH’s mandate, we may ask you to describe what happened, who was involved, when the events occurred, and how you believe discrimination or unequal treatment affected you. We may also ask for documents, messages, records, witness information, or prior complaints so we can assess possible legal options.

When to Contact Us

If your matter appears to fall within PATH’s mandate, we may ask you to describe what happened, who was involved, when the events occurred, and how you believe discrimination or unequal treatment affected you.
